The VR420A is a 14.4V, 6.5Ah (93.6Wh) lithium‑ion smart battery designed for integration into a wide variety of products and equipment. It contains eight 3.6V, 3.25Ah 18650 cells arranged in a 4‑series, 2‑parallel configuration and is capable of delivering up to 6.2A of discharge current.
Its internal battery management system (BMS) is fully compliant with both the System Management Bus (SMBus) and Smart Battery System (SBS) standards, enabling seamless operation within a smart battery ecosystem that includes a compatible charger and host device. The BMS provides comprehensive protection at both the cell and pack level, guarding against over‑voltage, under‑voltage, over‑current, short‑circuit and over‑temperature conditions.
Through its communication interface, a host device can access key battery information such as Runtime to Empty (minutes), Full Charge Capacity (mAh) and Relative State of Charge (%), all calculated by the impedance‑tracking fuel gauge. Additional calculated and static data further enhance its role as an active component within any power management system. When connected to a smart charger, the battery communicates its required charging voltage (mV) and current (mA), which the charger supplies until instructed to stop.
Externally, the VR420A features a UL94V‑0 rated black plastic enclosure and a Samtec 6‑way connector that supports both power delivery and communication. Compatible right‑angled and vertical mating connectors are available as accessories. A five‑segment LED display on the top of the battery provides a simple visual indication of remaining capacity in 20% increments.
The VR420A complies with UN38.3 transportation requirements, carries CE marking and meets RoHS and WEEE directives. It is also certified to IEC 62133‑2:2017/AMD1 and UL 2054 standards.
The battery is supplied with standard Entellion branding, but customised versions can be produced to meet specific project needs. Customisation options include bespoke artwork, additional regulatory certifications or SHA‑1 encryption. Customers are encouraged to contact us to discuss tailored configurations of the VR420A.
The VR420A is intended for embedded applications where the charger is integrated into the host device, and therefore no desktop charger is available for this model. For applications requiring a battery compatible with a desktop charger, the NH2054HD34 or NH2054QE34 are recommended alternatives.
For new projects incorporating the VR420A, we strongly advise purchasing the EVAL006 bench test PCB to facilitate straightforward electrical connection and evaluation during development.
